1976 for The Residents was marked by the release of The Third Reich 'n Roll and their first live performance since their official formation as a band.
Other notable events include Vileness Fats being cancelled; the release of "Aphids In The Hall", the first non-Residents release by the Ralph Records label; and the founding of The Cryptic Corporation.

January[]
- The Residents record a track titled "New Year/Old Song", later retitled "Loser ≅ Weed".[1]
February[]
- 1st: The Residents' "third" album The Third Reich 'n Roll is released on Ralph.[2]
- 29th: The Residents record "Leapmus", a suite of tracks that would eventually be adapted into Fingerprince. The suite also features early versions of "Boo Who?" and "You Yesyesyes Again".
April[]
- N. Senada returns from the Arctic, and present The Residents with a jar of Arctic air. This inspires the group to begin work on their next big project.
- The Residents begin work on "Satisfaction".
June[]
- 7th: The Residents perform at the Rather Ripped Records 5th Anniversary party in Berkeley, California. This is their first official live performance as "The Residents". Very shortly before this performance, a backing tape was compiled for playback during the show.[3]
- Barry Schwam (also known as Schwump) visits The Residents' studio.[1]
- Shortly after Snakefinger returns to the USA, he reunites with The Residents and they finish work on "Satisfaction" together. With Snakefinger, The Residents also record "You Yesyesyes" and continue sessions for "Six Things to a Cycle".
July[]
- Around this time, the Vileness Fats project is abandoned.
- 24th: Residents Uninc. is dissolved, and The Cryptic Corporation is formed.
- 31st: The Residents relocate to 444 Grove Street.[4]
August[]
- The Residents finish recording "Six Things to a Cycle".
September[]
- Ralph releases The Residents' "Satisfaction" single.
- Schwump's "Aphids in the Hall" single is also released by Ralph Records. Schwump is disappointed with the limited distribution of the record, and ceases work with Ralph.
October[]
- The Residents record a track later titled "The Idiot Bastard Son of What?".
November[]
- The Residents and Snakefinger record "You YesYesYes", '‘Home Age Conversation’, a new version of "Tourniquet of Roses" & "Walter Westinghouse".
- These recordings, along with a number of outtakes recorded since the release of Meet The Residents, are compiled into a three-sided album entitled Tourniquet of Roses.
December[]
- Due to several conflicts, Tourniquet of Roses is split into two releases: an LP called Fingerprince, released the following year, and an EP called Babyfingers, released in 1979.
- The Residents finish work on the track "Whoopy Snorp".[1]
