The Missing Year is a term which has often been used to refer to a ten month period for The Residents, which lasted between December 1996 and October 1997. The "missing year" in the group's history began with the development of the ultimately unproduced CD-ROM game I Murdered Mommy!, and ended with the Disfigured Night series of live performances from May to October 1997.
The term was first used publicly in promotional materials for the release of the I Murdered Mommy! soundtrack in 2004.[1] In 2009, the group issued a series of five digital releases through their Robot Selling Device online store, collectively titled 1997: The Missing Year; the series chronicled the group's activities during this period, including demos, rehearsals and live recordings.
Some material from this period of time was later collected and reissued on CD by Klanggalerie in 2016 as Disfigured Night, however much of the material featured in the 1997: The Missing Year series remains exclusive to the original digital releases.
