1997: The Missing Year - Adobe Disfigured Night is a live album by The Residents, released in 2009 via their Robot Selling Device as part of their 1997: The Missing Year series.
Adobe Disfigured Night showcases a one off show at Adobe World Centre in May 1997, showcasing their Disfigured Night live performance in a work-in-progress "greatest hits" format.
The show featured The Residents' first performance in San Jose in six years, and their last.
History[]
In 1997, The Residents were invited to perform at the Adobe World Centre as part of a charity night. The group accepted, performing their (then) instrumental Disfigured Night suite, with selected lyrics added to them. It is notable for featuring an early version of "Perchance To Dream", later used in the Talking Light live show.
Recordings of the performances were released on various live compilations in the years following the performance; in 2000, "Paint It Black" was released on Dot.Com, then in 2003, a broader collection of material from the show was released on the live box set Kettles Of Fish On The Outskirts Of Town, including "American Band Story", "Eloise", "Howard", "Constantinople", and "Kamikazi Lady".
In 2005, the BOGcast featured "The Ouija Board", before the full release of the performance via the Robot Selling Device in 2009. The complete, yet re-arranged, performance later appeared on the 2016 compilation album Disfigured Night.

Reviewing the digital album in March 2010,[1] freelance music reviewer Mark Prindle described Adobe Disfigured Night as "an excellent 46-minute performance that compiles various instrumental passages from their 1997 tapes... into extended works, and then tops them with golden oldie lyrics like 'Lizard Lady', 'Bouncing Benny', 'Gone Again' and 'Bach Is Dead'", finding that "even the pieces of music that didn't seem very interesting on the two previous [releases] come to life when strung together into longer pieces and augmented with male and female vocals", noting the "great cover" of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black".[2]
