Liner Notes[]
The Residents had been friends with Philip Lithman for many years before they finally lured him into the studio with false promises of fame & fortune to record a song that The Residents were certain would be a number one smash hit in the United States and limited parts of Europe. Phil had long been referred to as "Snakefinger" by the Tuxedoed Ones based on some eye-witnessing of Phil's finger assuming snake-like flexibility during a particularly frenzied guitar solo. Thus was recorded "The Spot", a song which started a long and fruitful relationship between The Residents & Snakefinger as co-writers, co-arrangers and co-producers. The tracks found on this compact disc were extracted from the LP's, Chewing Hides The Sound & Greener Postures, and cover the period from spring 1978 to the fall of 1980, which represents the teams best work.
Snakefinger went on to record two more studio albums with his band, THE VESTAL VIRGINS: MANUAL OF ERRORS & NIGHT OF DESIRABLE OBJECTS. Co-production & co-arrangements were under the able hands of ERIC DREW FELDMAN, whose similar work with Captain Beefheart is notorious. Phillip Lithman died in Linz, Austria while touring in support of the later album. Fortunately for us all, SNAKEFINGER lives on.
