"Anvil Forest" is a song by The Residents, first released on their 1983 compilation album Residue of The Residents.
An unfinished outtake from The Tunes of Two Cities, "Anvil Forest" is one of four recently recorded tracks featured on the Residue compilation.
Within the context of The Mole Trilogy, the song is representative of the culture of the Moles.
History[]
"Anvil Forest" was recorded using the sampling capabilities of The Residents' newly acquired E-mu emulators. It represents a previously unexplored aspect of Mole culture, leaving what exactly an "Anvil Forest" is, up to the reader's interpretation. The song is a particularly harsh sounding example of Mole cultural music.
It was recorded for The Tunes of Two Cities album, but were left off because "there was no room to put them on" the LP, but the song was not shelved for long, as it was, one year later, featured on the Residue of The Residents rarities album.
In 1988, the first CD re-issues of The Tunes of Two Cities re-instated the song, as well as "Open Up," into the middle of the album, placing it and "Open Up" between the end of side 1 and the start of side 2. Later CD issues however retained the original unaltered track listing.
Anvil Forest was next featured on the Residue Deux album, in the same place it was on the original Residue. It was then featured on the Mole Box in 2019, as a bonus track on the Tunes of Two Cities disc.
