BOG - The Residents Official News Blog (informally known as the BOG; originally titled The Residents Official News Blog and Website Wrapper, and later, The Residents Official News Blog and <the residents blog>) was an official news blog dedicated to the activities of The Residents, maintained by Big Brother of The Cryptic Corporation beginning in August 2003.
During the years it was active, the BOG was The Residents' primary means of communication, and detailed the release and touring cycles of many of their popular albums from this period, including Demons Dance Alone, Animal Lover and The Bunny Boy.
The traditional news blog closed around the start of September 2010, following a website redesign which integrated the website's news section into the chat room and replaced the blog format with updates in undated bullet points. This section of the website, originally titled The Residents News and Chat Room or Residents Headline News, once again was briefly titled "BOG" from 2013 until the section was replaced with an XML news feed in September 2014, following another redesign of the website.
Following yet another redesign in January 2017, residents.com resumed a news blog, with the advent of the News Machine section, which has continued into the present day.
History[]
The Residents' Official News Blog (or "BOG")[]
The BOG (in its various guises) functioned as the primary online presence of The Residents and The Cryptic Corporation, beginning in August 2003 when the group acquired the residents.com domain name from fan James "tzoq" Redekop, administrator of the now-defunct fan website RZWeb.[1] The blog was maintained by the site's administrator Will Rothers, who wrote the blog under the pseudonym Big Brother.
The BOG continued officially until the redesign of the website in April 2008, although despite these changes (and the installation of new blog software following a crash) the website would feature a news blog on its home page for some time afterward, which was still occasionally referred to informally as the BOG.
After the redesign and expansion of the website (and installation of new blog software following a crash), the blog was simply titled "<the residents blog>" (according to the website header of the site's main page).
Format change and integration with chat room[]
Following another redesign around September 2010, the format of The Residents' home page was changed, with webmaster Big Brother instead merging news updates with the website's chat room. Unlike the earlier news blog, news updates on the revised website initially did not include dates or timestamps, instead being comprised of "headlines" in short bullet points under the banner "Residents Headline News".
The news section was later expanded to include both the bullet point "headlines" alongside more detailed news updates in early 2011. Beginning in 2013, the title "BOG" was once again applied to the section. Originally, the section also featured the most recent updates from Mama Ralph's official Twitter feed; later it featured the most recent posts from the Residents review blog by independent music collector and diarist "Grandpa Gio". The chat room was moved to a separate area of the website in early 2013, and then merged back into the news page the following year.
This version of the news feature was removed and replaced by an XML feed in September 2014, following another redesign of the website. The XML feed was itself succeeded by another news blog, The Residents' News Machine, following a further redesign of the website in January 2017.
