Meet The Residents Wiki

Blorp Esette is a compilation album by the Los Angeles Free Music Society, released in April of 1977.[1] it features one song by The Residents in the group's first appearance off Ralph.

History[]

LAFMS[]

Formed in the same Californian cesspool as The Residents were in 1973,[2] the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) was a loose collective of avant-garde musicians, responsible for strange concerts, magazines, and most notably, a series of bizarre records released between 1975 - 1982 (with periodic revivals from 1999 onwards). The records often attempted to give more notoriety to lesser known acts.

The Residents were invited to contribute to LAFM's Blorp Esette sampler album shortly following the release of their Fingerprince album.[3] Blorp Esette also notably featured the band Smegma and artwork by Captain Beefheart.

Whoopy Snorp[]

The Cryptic Corporation donated one four-minute track, Whoopy Snorp to the compilation,[4] where it was misspelled 'Snort' on the sleeve. The song had begun life during the The Third Reich 'N Roll sessions in August 1975, and was completed during the December 1976 Fingerprince sessions.[5] The song shares dialogue with Scene 17 of Vileness Fats, and lyrics from 'Never Known Questions.'

Release[]

The album was released in April of 1977 through LAFMs in a limited edition of 500. This marked The Residents' first appearance away from Ralph Records.

The release was promoted on the July 1977[1] Residents radio special, during which Jay Clem defends the compilation from radio presenter Sid Powell, who states it 'contains quite a few selections all performed by typical California idiots.'[4] The original release is now considered rare.

Around the same time, LAFMs also released a split single by Joe Potts / Slimy Adenoid And The Pablums, with the B-Side dedicated to The Residents.[6]

Legacy[]

In 1980, LAFMS released 'Blorp-Esette Volume Two,' featuring slightly more notable acts, such as Wild Man Fischer, Smegma & Henry Kaiser, but The Residents did not return. Whoopy Snorp has been absent from the album's CD re-issues, included in the 1999 Blorp Esette box set.[7]

Whoopy Snorp has since appeared on Residue Of The Residents (1983), Diskomo (1990), Documentation (2009), and the Fingerprince pREServed edition (2018). An 'RDX' mix of the song later appeared on 'Leftovers Again?!'

In 2022, Superior Viaduct re-issued Blorp Esette on vinyl, with The Residents' contribution maintained on December 16th.[8]
