Brava is a live album by The Residents, featuring excerpts from a recording of the penultimate show of the group's Icky Flix tour on October 28th 2001 at the Brava Theatre in San Francisco.
The album was released September 30th 2010 as an on-demand CD-R release via The Residents' official website, under the Ralph Records label - the first Ralph-branded release in 21 years.
Three tracks from this show ("Man's World", "Icky Flix Theme" and "One Minute Movies") were previously released on the Kettles of Fish on the Outskirts of Town box set in 2003; these three songs are omitted from Brava.
History[]
Recording[]
A tour promoting The Residents' 2001 Icky Flix DVD could have been simple: presenting the videos, and performing the new arrangements after. The Residents did not want to do this; instead wanting to accompany the videos live as a six-piece band,[1] similar to how silent films were scored.
The show had through four well-received legs and concluded with a residency at the Brava theatre for Halloween 2001. These 'Brava' shows featured a considerably different setlist compared to the touring version.[2]
During the show, The Residents were joined (and in some cases portrayed by) Molly Harvey, Nolan Cook, Carla Fabrizio & Toby Dammit. Gamelan Sekar Jaya opened the show and joined The Residents on stage for the finale;[3] Bridegroom of Blood.[4] For their appearance with the group wore ' anthrax' costumes - seemingly a reference to the 2001 anthrax attacks.[3]
Release[]
By this point, The Residents had made a habit of releasing live albums of all their touring shows; Mole Show, The 13th Anniversary Show, Cube-E, Wormwood, but no such album was made available for the Icky Flix tour. In 2003, The Residents mixed 43 minutes of the 'Brava' concert audio for the 'Kettles Of Fish On The Outskirts Of Town' live box set,[5] which included 17 minutes of video of the show. In 2009, an Icky Flix concert film, filmed in March of 2001, was made available on DVD.
Ralph Records[]
In August of 2010, The Residents launched the Ralph Records heading on their residents.com website, directing visitors to other websites where one could purchase official Residents material; MVD Audio, Robot Selling Device, Mute, and Amazon. But it was apparent the group had bigger plans for the page, and it teased 'new additions and surprises in the coming days.'[6]
On September 30th, 2010,[7] 'Brava' was made available for download on the Robot Selling Device website,[7] and two days afterward, it was released on CD-R through the Ralph Records page as an on-demand product.[8] This was first Ralph Records release since the 'Buckaroo Blues & Black Barry' cassette, 21 years earlier. The CDs were manufactured and sold through The Residents' CreateSpace page.[4]
It is apparent that the 'Brava' CD does not contain the full show, as the Kettles of Fish box set includes three additional tracks of the show not featured here, (Man's World, Icky Flix Theme & One Minute Movies.)
Legacy[]
In July 2018, Amazon discontinued the CreateSpace on-demand CD manufacturing system, thus making the Brava CD unavailable for purchase. In January 2022, Cherry Red Records released the album to streaming services.
