Buckaroo Blues & Black Barry (often referred to simply as Black Barry to avoid confusion with the studio album Buckaroo Blues) is a live album by The Residents, released on cassette on October 13th 1989 by Ralph Records.
History[]
Buckaroo Blues & Black Barry features a live recording of the first two suites of The Residents' 1989 live show Cube-E, recorded in September 1989 at The Cowell Theatre in San Francisco.
Cube-E was developed between 1987 and 1989, and was intended to tell the origins of American music, from its beginnings in 19th-century cowboy poems and chants, to the African-American spiritual music that resulted in what was then known as modern pop.
The cassette was originally sold exclusively on the Cube-E European tour of 1989 through Ralph Records, although a later version was pressed and sold publicly.
It was one of the few Residents releases to be exclusive to the cassette format, until 2020, when a 2xCD re-issue was included in the pREServed Cube-E Box. The second disc would contain the previously unheard Baby King performance from the same date, as well as excerpts from a performance in Germany some weeks later, Mr. Skull's NYE Song, and an interview with Hardy Fox.
