Chrome are an American experimental rock band founded in San Francisco in 1975 by musicians Damon Edge and Gary Spain. After the recording of their 1976 debut album The Visitation, singer Mike Low left the band, and was be replaced by guitarist Helios Creed. Their second album, Alien Soundtracks, followed in 1977.
In 1979 the band, now consisting solely of Edge and Creed, released their third album, Half Machine Lip Moves, and an EP, Read Only Memory. That year they contributed three songs to the Ralph Records compilation album Subterranean Modern, alongside The Residents, Tuxedomoon and MX-80 Sound. The latter two artists signed to Ralph shortly thereafter, however Chrome instead chose to sign with English label Beggars Banquet, releasing their fourth album, Red Exposure, the following year.
In 1980 Chrome again became a quartet, with the addition of the new rhythm section of John and Hilary Stench. This line-up produced the albums Blood on the Moon (released in 1981) and 3rd from the Sun (released in 1982). In 1983, Edge moved to Paris and formed a new line-up of Chrome, releasing a series of albums as "Chrome featuring Damon Edge" over the next decade.
Edge died of heart failure in August 1995. Helios Creed reactivated the project in 1997 with John and Hilary Stench, producing the album Retro Transmission; this line-up recorded and toured until 2001. In 2002, Creed completed previously unreleased recordings by Edge, releasing them as the album Angel of the Clouds.
In 2013, Creed again re-activated the project, releasing an album of previously unreleased material from 1979-1980, Half Machine from the Sun, and a new album, Feel It Like a Scientist, the following year. Two further albums by the Creed-led Chrome, Techromancy and Scaropy, followed in 2017 and 2021 respectively.
