Cube-E , The History Of American Music Live In Holland, is a live album by The Residents, recorded on the second leg of their Cube-E tour. The performances represent The Residents' final shows in Holland or Spain for nine years. The group would next play there for the 1999 Wormwood tour.
Background[]
Development[]
From 1987 to 1989, The Residents were deep within development of their follow up to the successful 13th Anniversary Show. The group had already decided that it should take advance of MIDI technology, which had proven so helpful to the group during their one off Snakey Wake live show. By late 1987, the artists had already decided they wanted to do something inspired by cowboys, and began writing Buckaroo Blues. After spending most of 1988 focused on developing Buckaroo Blues, the group performed it live in its entirety twice, in November 1988 and March 1989. It was around this time they decided they wanted to start developing a selection of Elvis covers, as well as a selection of material inspired by plantation music. What they eventually realized they had, was a complete history of American music, and what would evolve into an amazing live show.
Tour[]
Following a series of test performances, the group took the show on a world tour throughout Autumn of 1989, and then again in the Winter / Spring of 1989 - 1990. This album was recorded during the later half of the Winter/Spring 1990 tour, mostly in Spain in March 29th, 1990, but with one track (Hound Dog / Out) recorded on March 6th 1990, in Holland.
The release followed the more limited Cube-E live album Buckaroo Blues / Black Barry, released in October of 1989. Compared to that album, Cube E Live in Holland is 30 minutes longer, but is still not a full show recording; cutting six songs from the show's second half. The first complete recording of Cube-E would be released in 2006 on the Cube-E box set; it is entire March 6th recording, one track of which is heard on Live in Holland.
Release[]
The album was mixed and edited between April and August 1990, and was released on October 13th 1990 through Torso, the group's Dutch record label. Around that same time it was released in the US by Enigma Records on CD, Cassette, and as a 2xLP.
