"Der Twist beginnt" aka "The Twist" is an American pop song written and originally released in 1958 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters as a B-side. This song would be covered two years later by "Chubby Checker". Chubby Checker's 1960 cover version of the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960, where it stayed for one week, and setting a record at the time as the only song to reach number one during two different chart runs when it resurfaced and topped the Hot 100 again for two weeks starting on January 13, 1962.
History[]
With this song being part of the "Swastikas on Parade" suite, it does not have a lot of unique history with the group. It does have significance for a few reasons. The Residents likely heard this song quite a bit as college kids with "The Twist" dance craze and the song being a #1 hit in the 60s. To reach a wider audience, it was common for famous hits to be officially translated into other languages, leading to a German version. This made it a easy choice as the opener for their third album, The Third Reich 'n Roll. This sample did appear at all three shows of their short-lived "Dog Stab!" tour during The Third Reich 'n Roll encore. Again, with this song being a sample, it is completely absent from the "Groovy Greats RDX" tape found on the 2023 pREServed edition of the album.
