Freak Show is an anthology comic book written and inspired by The Residents' album of the same name. The comic contains nine different stories for the nine tracks of the album.
Background[]
Throughout 1990, The Residents were deep in the studio, creating an album based on their nostalgic memories of travelling Freak Shows that fascinated and scarred their childhood minds. The end product was Freak Show.
But once the album was released, the group refused to let the project go. They were obsessed with these characters they had created and decided to make Freak Show a multi-media project. In early 1991 The Residents met in England with Edwin 'Savage Pencil' Pouncey and Brian Bolland with intentions to work together. The Residents had been made aware of Savage Pencil through his album artwork, and Brian Bolland's work on Batman and Judge Dredd. During discussions, a comic book adaptation of Freak Show was suggested, and a group of the most respected comic book artists of the time were brought together to create the adaptation.[1]
Freak Show was released on April 1st, 1992, through Dark Horse comics.[2] In December of that same year a hard back edition was published, featuring a soundtrack CD[3] of outtakes from the Freak Show sessions, as well as new material, which had previously been released as a single in June.[4]
The comic has been out of print for 20 plus years.
