"From MOM1" (From Mark of the Mole 1) is an outtake by The Residents, representing a crossroads between the Commercial Album and Mark of the Mole. The track, only a minute long, was briefly considered for the Commercial Album pREServed CD set, although The Residents insisted it appear on the Mole Box.
Background[]
During production of the pREServed series circa 2019, The Mysterious Archivist discovered the 66 second "From MOM1" with other early 1980s material. With its title being an abbreviation of "From Mark of the Mole 1," The Residents stated that it belonged on the Mole Box set which collected material related to their 1981-1985 Mole Trilogy. Despite this, the Archivist noted that it shared more stylistic similarities with the material found on the Commercial Album as all 40 of the albums tracks had been roughly a minute long, as this was. The Residents heard this suggestion, but without further explanation, insisted that it belonged with the Mole material. Similarly, "Boy in Love," which was described as appearing 'At the time that Mark of the Mole was being recorded' when it was first released, appeared on the Commercial Album set.
The track was eventually released on the Miscellaneous Mole Materials bonus disc featured on the Mole Box, following three other tracks from the Mark of the Mole sessions, which are teased and speculated as material from the unfinished Third Part of the Mole Trilogy. Featuring "a weird processed voice that runs parallel to a more traditional one," the track was described as "so freaky."[1]
