Meet The Residents Wiki

"Hallowed Be Thy Wean 1971" (also known as "Very Long Suite", or alternatively "Hallowed Be Thy Ween" or "Hallowed Be Thy Wean") is a suite by Residents, Uninc., which compiles a number of short pieces the group had been working on. The suite takes up most of the second side of the group's 1971 demo tape B.S..

A shortened edit was first released in 1997 on the box set Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses, and the full original suite finally saw official release on Record Store Day 2019 on the full, pREServed vinyl edition of B.S..

History[]

"Hallowed Be Thy Wean" was compiled by Residents, Uninc. in late 1971 from an assortment of recordings made in their small apartment in San Mateo, and live recordings of the group's guerrilla-style performances at The Boarding House in San Francisco and at the wedding of their friend Philip "Snakefinger" Lithman in October 1971.

Along with the tracks which precede it on the second side of the group's 1971 long-unreleased demo tape B.S., "Hallowed Be Thy Wean" is an approximate representation of the group's live set at that time, although consisting mostly of pieces recorded by the group at home.

Elements of the suite (particularly "Eloise" and "Kamakazi Lady") would continue to find their way into the group's live sets as late as 2011 - usually deployed by the group as an easily-performed distraction when experiencing technical issues.[1] "Eloise" and "Kamakazi Lady" were both filmed for possible inclusion in the group's abandoned feature film project Vileness Fats.

References[]

From it's title to it's lyrics, Hallowed Be Thy Ween contains several references to popular culture; the title, 'Hallowed Be Thy Ween' itself is a play on the biblical quote 'Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.' where it is crossed with the popular holiday, Halloween.

The suite's lyrics make references to the mythological figure of 'The Sandman' who was made popular both by the 1954 song of the same name, and by the E. T. A. Hoffmann prose adaption of his legend in 1816, which would later be adapted by The Residents in their 2007 album 'The Voice of Midnight'. Also referenced is the 1941 boogie-woogie hit 'Scrub Me Mama with a Boogie Beat' most well known for it's highly racist animated music short, which reportedly aired on television throughout the 1950s and 1980s. The song is parodied as 'Eat Me Mother (With a Boogie Beat)'.

The song 'Eloise' features reference to Mortimer Snerd, a puppet owned and portrayed by Edgar Bergen on radio and TV for forty years from 1938 through to 1978.

Release[]

Long unavailable to the public in its complete form, the first extract from the suite to be released to the general public was "Kamakazi Lady", which was included on the 1983 "MOP tapes" compilation Residue of The Residents

The first version of the suite to be released to the general public was a slightly shortened edit, twenty seconds shorter than the demo tape version (under the slightly alternate title "Hallowed Be Thy Ween") which featured on the four-disc set Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses in 1997.

The shorter edit was also included on the related album Roosevelt 2.0 in 2001, as well as retrospective compilations ERA B474 in 2012, The Delta Nudes' Greatest Hiss in 2013, and The Residents Present The Delta Nudes in 2015.

The complete, original mix of "Hallowed Be Thy Wean" was released for the first time on Record Store Day 2019, as part of the remastered and pREServed limited vinyl edition of B.S.. Here it was again retitled, this time as "Very Long Suite" (for no reason other than that the group "fancied a change"[2]).

This same remaster was reissued later in 2019 as "Hallowed Be Thy Wean", on the two-disc compilation A Nickle If Your Dick's This Big.

Remasters[]

Not including the various short excerpts of the suite that had been released since 1977, there are three remasters of the track. The first one, lasting 14 minutes and 4 seconds, was featured on the Huddled Masses box set. The second, featured on the RZ ERA B474 digital album features 4 more seconds of silence added to the end. The version featured on the B.S LP and Nickle box set, features a second of unintelligible studio dialogue before the track, and has been sped up 1%, with a few extra seconds of silence added to the end.

Snakefinger's wedding[]

Lyrics

Do you, PC, to make this something for which to make our own, who she is? Do you,
sweet little Peggy Honeydew, take this penetrated hero and all? Do you PC, take
this woman that you care to hold, love and fit, shake and bake, fake and cake,
insinuate all day as long as you...

Sandman []

Lyrics[]

The Sandman Waits for no ones Sake
But Just to save his skin
His oily grease is full of fleas
But he has put no bone

Pink Lemonade[]

Lyrics[]

He's all alone,
Has no home
To edge his knifey blade
Sits inside a microdot
And drinks Pink Lemonade.
Oh Yeah.

Snakefinger's wedding (Cont)[]

Lyrics

And let us pray, oh great heavenly horse, who soars the skyway, let not the hooves
of your indiscretion find their mark in the hearts and brains of these raving
young children. Show them, oh most merciless named one, not with the balls of your
hay-bale turds, but with courage in-blazed in your [????]. Amen.

N. Senada Chant[]

Lyrics[]

N. Senada! N. Senada's Head's a nodding to
Nod your head, big red!
Visit the 'Frisco zoo!

Eat Me Mother[]

Lyrics[]

Oh! Eat me mother with a gut first stout
Yes, Eat me mother cause I feel left out!
Sug Me Sadie me with a boogie beat
Yeah kill me lady cause I need a treat
Sunset's fast in the blithering haze
A crune with a prune and I haven't got it made
Slay me with a hatchet on the bumper of a ford
Cause I hope I don't catch it but I don't know what for
Sunset's fast in the blithering haze
A crune with a prune and I haven't got it made

Bumble Bee[]

Lyrics[]

The Sun Hangs Out
On the edge of the world
The Bumble Bee's shout
And the Flags are Unferld
It's a magical, mystical, time of the day
The Comets Have Chased all the rain from the Hay
But if'n you think that There's no more to Do...
Sog a sick bag, untie your shoe!
Sunset's fast in the blithering haze
A crune with a prune and I haven't got it made

Lyrics[]

Foul flavor of bourbon coated my nostrils like a seething hatred!
The stench of bitch was more than a breathing body can understand
But then, all bodies don't breathe, do they Eloise?
No!
Some play by the night, and bubble with scorn
And beat on the knees of the never been born!
God! How I hated that day of
all days,
At the end of the nights with the sultry pink tights
Ahhhhh! It split me in two!
From the bowl of a beam with the edge of a blade of another nightshade!
And, and could I? Could I? Could I cry out from all that I've heard? Huh? Huh?
Oh, No, no, no, never a word from this Mortimer Snerd!

Lyrics[]

We have a special treat for you tonight. The uh we-
And Round and Round & Round, oh dobedobeda on the doorknob..
You're not getting any dad!
Philip Lithman: It's now my pleasure to introduce to you someone who's been in this
business a, a really long time. She's a warm, wonderful, truly sincere person.
We've worked together many times before, she's a personal friend of mine, I'm sure
you're all going to love her now. And we want to give her a big, warm welcome.
Direct from a cabaret engagement at the Sands in Las Vegas, it's my great privilege
and honor to give to you, the fabulous, the great, Miss Peggy Honeydew!
Peggy Honeydew:
Go fuck yourself on a doorknob, mom
In a moldy auditorium
They'll find you hanging upside down
With your glasses goin' round and round
(And round and round and round and round)
Go fuck yourself on a doorknob, mom
In a moldy auditorium
They'll find you hanging upside down
With your glasses goin' round and round
(And round and round and round and round)
And full of eyes and full of swizzle
(You're not gettin' any dad)
And don't get caught out in the drizzle
(It's so, so, so sad)
'Cause I love you, 'cause I love you
(You're not gettin' any dad, it's so, so, so sad)
Cause I love you so
(We love, we love, we love you so)

Lyrics[]

Kamakazi Lady drifts in at night
She likes to check and see if your underwear's tight
She knows the way to open up the holes in your head
And see the silly sucker that you thought was dead
The floating locust garden of your old sweet fondling dreams
Kamakazi Lady slips in at night
She likes to check and see if your underwear's tight
She knows the way to open up the holes in your head
And see the silly sucker that you thought was dead
The night meal of the milque wheats
I ate it to the treats
Kamakazi Lady slips in at night
She likes to check and see if your underwear's tight
She knows the way to open up the holes in your head
And see the silly sucker that you thought was dead

Notes[]

Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses (1997)[]

Baby Sex was an album which was recorded by The Residents in 1971 under N. Senada's Theory of Obscurity. It has never been released, but after 26 years The Residents thought some people might be interested in hearing some of it. Hallowed Be Thy Ween is notable because it ends with the recording of a riot that erupted at the end of an early Residents performance.
