"Heroes and Villains" is a song by the American rock band the Beach Boys from their 1967 album Smiley Smile and their unfinished Smile project. Written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks, Wilson envisioned the song as an Old West-themed musical comedy that would surpass the recording and artistic achievements of "Good Vibrations". The single was Brother Records' first release. While it failed to meet critical and commercial expectations, it was nevertheless a hit record, peaking at number 12 in the U.S. and number 8 in the UK. It was covered in The Residents 1976 album "The Third Reich 'N' Roll" on the suite "Swastikas on Parade" as the last song.
History[]
With this song being part of a suite it does not have a lot of unique history with the group. Like with all other song from this album it is a cover of the 1967 hit "Heroes and Villains". The Residents likely heard this song quite a bit as college students. with Heroes and Villains being a hit in 1967 it was an easy choice for their 3rd album The Third Reich 'n Roll. This song has never been performed live by the group as it is cut from all live versions of "Swastikas on Parade". The song was not included on "Groovy Greats RDX".
