In Between Dreams Live is a live album by The Residents, recorded live at The Chapel in San Francisco in April 2018, on their tour of the same name. It was first released in several limited editions on Secret Records on 21st June 2019.
The album was reissued by Cherry Red Records, MVD Audio and New Ralph Too with new cover art and an alternate title, In Between Dreams Live In San Francisco, on December 7th 2020. The Cherry Red edition also contains a DVD with footage of the show, and initial copies included a bonus 7" single with two additional tracks recorded live in Japan.
History[]
The first live album from The Residents since Shadowland in 2015, In Between Dreams Live was recorded at the group's shows at The Chapel in San Francisco in April 2018, during their In Between Dreams tour.
The recording of this show released to the public features noticeably edited crowd noise; an intentional addition, according to The Residents' spokesperson from Cherry Red Records, Richard Anderson, which was designed to imitate what one Resident thought the crowd on James Brown's Live At The Apollo sounded like when he first heard it. This effect was also simulated on their cover version of the first half of Live At The Apollo, featured on 1984's George & James.[1]
The initial release was on Secret Records, making it the first newly-recorded Residents live album to be issued on vinyl since Cube-E: Live In Holland in 1990. The cover art for the Secret Records edition of the album was created by Stott Howard, portraying "a surreal Residents-themed fantasy world".
The CD was sold in a long box, a rare feature in 2019. One limited edition of 250 of the vinyl LP sets was also intended to include a bonus LP of extra material, entitled Dreaming Of An Eyeball Beaming, which is unavailable in any other format; however the bonus LP was delayed in the manufacturing stage and sent out separately from the live album to people who had purchased it.
In Between Dreams Live In San Francisco[]
The Chapel recording was reissued by Cherry Red Records, MVD Audio and New Ralph Too in December 2020, with updated cover art and an alternate title, In Between Dreams Live In San Francisco.
The standard edition of the Cherry Red version of the album includes a DVD of the performance, featuring two tracks not featured on the album; "The Cowboy Waltz" and "Six More Miles To The Graveyard". The first 999 copies of this edition also included a bonus 7" single with two further tracks, "Picnic / Loser" and "God's Magic Finger", both recorded live in Japan in March 2017.
