KBOO-FM is a non-profit, listener-funded community radio station broadcasting from Portland, Oregon.
The station's mission is to serve groups in its listening area who are underrepresented on other local radio stations and to provide access to the airwaves for people who have unconventional or controversial tastes and points of view. It broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and has been on the air since 1968.
KBOO was an early promoter of The Residents, airing their music as early as 1973 due to the efforts of then-program director (and friend of the group) William Reinhardt.
History with The Residents[]
KBOO-FM was the first known radio station to air The Residents' music in 1973, with then-program director William Reinhardt befriending the group and promoting them heavily on his program The Radio Lab. KBOO was also the home of Barry "Schwump" Schwam, whose "Frog Opera" fascinated the group and led them to sign Schwump as the first outside artist on their label Ralph Records.

KBOO program guide design by Porno Graphics, ca. 1973
Around this time The Residents' graphic design arm Porno Graphics produced a program guide cover for the station as a favor for Reinhardt, which they claimed contained "hidden symbols". Reinhardt said of this design that the KBOO community "never got it" and "didn't like it very much".[1]
In 1977, Reinhardt hosted a Residents-themed radio festival on KBOO, during which he aired The Residents' then-unreleased demo tapes The W***** B*** Album and B.S. in their entirety. This broadcast is thought to be the source of the bootlegs of these demos, which circulated among collectors and on the internet for many years until their official releases in 2018 and 2019.
