"Krafty Cheese" is a song by The Residents, first released on the album Duck Stab!/Buster & Glen on November 30th 1978 by Ralph Records.

A nod to the German electronic music group Kraftwerk, the song has since been revisited a number of times by The Residents, most recently being performed during their Dog Stab! mini-tour in September 2021.

History[]

Apparently a result of The Residents' brief flirtation with "kosmische music",[1] "Krafty Cheese" was named due to the group believing it sounded like "cheesy Kraftwerk". The Residents would later cover Kraftwerk's 1978 single "The Model" with guitarist Snakefinger on the latter's 1979 solo debut Chewing Hides The Sound, and recorded another song named in reference to the German group, "Kraftwerk", during sessions for Commercial Album that year.

The song was revisited by The Residents in 2012 as an instrumental demo for the unfinished Duck Stab! 35th Anniversary project D*ck S*ab, and again in 2021 for the streaming TV special Duck Stab! Alive! and the ill-fated Dog Stab! tour. In 2016, the song was featured in The Residents' soundtrack for the Loris Gréaud film Sculpt.

Musician Brett Spivey recorded a cover of the song which was featured on his album Many Happy Returns in 2014. The Spivey version was included on the unofficial tribute album Who Killed Ralph? III in 2016.

Two further covers by Darkly and Pee Wee Travolta were submitted for the official tribute/mash-up album I Am A Resident! in 2017; the Darkly version was selected by The Residents for use in the suite "Hello Duck Stab", featured on the CD version of the album. An artist named Krafty Cheese recorded a version of "Eloise" which was also selected for the project.

Lyrics[]

You care for plants and we care for you;
You care for plants and we care for you.
Upward to the sun we grow,
Careful plants, be
Careful plants.
Upward to the sun we grow,
Careful plants, be
Careful plants.
Upward to the sun we grow,
Careful plants, be
Careful plants.
Upward to the sun we grow,
Careful plants, be
Careful plants.
Upward to the sun we grow...[2]
