"Leapmus" is a 14 minute suite recorded in February 1976 by The Residents, a full year before the release of their 1977 album Fingerprince.
It would remain in complete obscurity until the release of the expanded and remastered pREServed edition of Fingerprince in 2018.
History[]
The suite was recorded in February 1976, with its title referencing that year's leap day (February 29th). The message "For Helen" is written on the master tape's cover.
The nature of "Leapmus" is unclear. It appears to have been originally conceived as a self-contained suite, not inteded for any kind of public release nor further development. However, it could be considered a demo for Side A of The Residents' 1977 studio album Fingerprince, as many of the musical themes and composition techniques featured in the suite would later be present in the LP.
"Leapmus" presents primitive versions of "You Yesyesyes" and "Boo Who?", which would both be further developed and eventually included in Fingerprince. The "Leapmus" version of "You Yesyesyes" also became a part of the album, in a two-and-a-half-minute edit titled "You Yesyesyes Again".
The recordings would not be available until 2018, when the pREServed edition of Fingerprince was released. The suite was included in the Finger Ephemera bonus disc, completely unedited from its master tape. According to The Mysterious Archivist, not even The Cryptic Corporation had listened to "Leapmus" before it was made public.
