Live At The Fillmore is a double live album by The Residents, recorded on the final night of their Disfigured Night series of performances.
Background[]
Development[]
The 'Disfigured Night' series of performance began in May of 1997, when The Residents were hired to perform at the Adobe World Centre in San Jose, California. For the performance they used an instrumental demo album they'd been working on as the basis to create a greatest hits style live show, combining songs written between 1971 - 1990 with all new material. These shows were very exclusive and only the elite were able to attend. One such attendee was the house manager for The Fillmore in San Francisco, who later met with the group backstage and asked if they'd like to perform at the venue on the week of Halloween, which was five months away. The Residents agreed and developed the show further. Between June and July, they composed an easily performed six part suite titled Disfigured Night. The suite was a shortened version of the instrumental demo album they had been working on since 1995.
After a performance of the suite by itself in Köln, Germany, The Residents began work on developing it further. Perhaps noting that their last full concert tour was seven years past at that point, The Residents began developing a set that showcased how their career had changed since that point, by re-arranging material from Freak Show, Our Finest Flowers, Gingerbread Man, and their latest album, Have A Bad Day. The show also would include selections from their older material from 1978 - 1986.
The group performed at the Fillmore from October 27th - October 31st, 1997. Early performances included 'Herman The Human Mole', but this was removed on the last two performances, with Mr. Skull announcing the death of Herman on stage on the 30th.[1]
