Live In The USA! 13th Anniversary Tour is a double live album by The Residents, recorded February 10th 1986 during the group's 13th Anniversary Show tour.
History[]
Following the release of The Residents' Big Bubble album in September of 1985, the group were booked for a short tour of Japan. For this tour, The Residents created an hour long show entitled The Eyeball Show, which contained music from the band's entire career. After the conclusion of the Japanese tour in late October, Ralph Records booked them for a similar tour of the US from December '85 to February '86. This tour would feature an expanded version of the Eyeball Show setlist, and would be re-titled 'The 13th Anniversary Show'
This double live album captures one of the final performances of that second leg, at The First Avenue Club, Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 10th 1986. Later third, and even fourth, legs of the tour would occur through August and October of 1986, with one final show taking place on January 10th 1987.
Release[]
The album was released in April 1986 in a limited quantity of 500.[1] It would be The Residents' first double album, as well as the first full recording of the 13th Anniversary Show to be released following The Eyeball Show LP, which featured a heavily edited version of the show.
The release faded into rarity until 1992, when the UWEB fan club sold a double CD version of the show, once again, in a limited edition of 500. It would receive its first non limited pressing in 2015 by Klanggalerie, who added the bonus track 'Kaw-Liga', a recording from the European tour in October.
Reception[]
Retrospective[]
In a March 2010 review of the UWEB CD edition of Live In The USA!,[2][3] freelance music reviewer Mark Prindle described the "obscure" album as "the trimmed-down, disappointing '80s version of The Residents [trying] their hand at material written by the bulked-up, bizarre '70s version", noting that if not for the presence of Snakefinger, the album would sound "like two people... one singing in a hick drawl and the other playing strange melodies on cheap synthesizers".[3]
