The Negative Zone is an ongoing, unofficial Residents-inspired comic strip by "Una Misteriosa" of The Mysterious Spanish Ladies, which premiered on the home page of Meet The Residents Wiki on January 1st 2023, as part of the wiki's sixth anniversary celebrations.

It is a semi-constrained comic strip featuring the ephemeral character Nobody, removed from The Residents' operetta Not Available prior to its completion. It is believed (but has not been publicly confirmed) that numerous members of The Mysterious Spanish Ladies contribute gags to the strip.

Description

"There's somebody that lives in the Negative Zone, but I can't remember His name."
The Mysterious N. Senada, ca. 1977

The Negative Zone is an "intentionally poorly drawn",[1] semi-constrained comic strip which features Nobody, a character removed from The Residents' operetta Not Available early in its development, for having been deemed "too negative". In the strips, the almost transparent Nobody offers his unique (and usually very negative) perspective from a static position within the mysterious "Negative Zone".

The comic's artist Una Misteriosa has said she creates the strips using "the cheapest ball-point pen in (her) arsenal, on the cheapest paper (she) can find",[1] and notes "a consistent anti-philosophy" inherent in the design and content of the comic.[2] Other members of The Mysterious Spanish Ladies are also said to occasionally contribute ideas and gags to the strips, though this has not been confirmed publicly by The Ladies themselves.

During its first year of publication, The Negative Zone's art was limited to only a single, static image of its main character; beginning in January 2024, a "miniseries" of strips with the subtitle "Journey to Nowhere" broke with this tradition, pushing the comic's established minimalism to new lengths by having Nobody vanish before the viewer's eyes, leaving only an empty background. Whether this indicates an ongoing change to the strip's style and format is yet to be confirmed by its creators.
