Memorial Hits is a compilation album by The Residents, issued in 1985 in Japan by Wave Records.
Background[]
In 1985, Japanese label Wave Records came to a licensing agreement with The Cryptic Corporation, gaining permission to release The Residents' latest album at the time, The Big Bubble. This was the first official release of the band in the country, and would end up becoming somewhat popular in the Japanese underground scene.
Seeing the success of the record, Wave did not wait to cash in on this popularity. They funded a four date mini-tour of The Residents in Japan, titled The Eyeball Show. And in order to familiarize the country with the groups back catalog, the label released Memorial Hits, a compilation of material from 1976 to 1984.
The album art was made by cartoonist Mark Beyer, who had previously created artwork for two Snakefinger projects; the "Man In The Dark Sedan" single and the Manual of Errors LP. Memorial Hits came with an inner sleeve, containing information about the band's history, as well as a mostly accurate lyrics sheet.
