The Mill Valley Film Festival (or MVFF) is an annual film festival held in Mill Valley, California, every October since 1977. Organized by the California Film Institute, the MVFF welcomes more than two hundred filmmakers from over fifty countries every year.
The Residents (and their handlers, The Cryptic Corporation) have had a long-running relationship with the Mill Valley Film Festival, and have made notable appearances at the 1990, 1997 and 2022 events.

1990 festival[]
The Residents' first noted appearance at the Mill Valley Film Festival was at the 13th annual film festival in October 1990.
The VHS documentary featurette The Eyes Scream: A History of The Residents was premiered at the Masonic Center on October 7th; a number of dancers in Cube-E Resident costumes (including noted fan Kim Andrews) also appeared at the screening.[1]
1993 festival[]
The Residents were falsely rumored to have attended the 1993 festival out of costume; Hardy Fox of The Cryptic Corporation later explained that while he was in attendance, The Residents themselves apparently couldn't get tickets (and didn't want to be placed on a guest list).[2]
1997 festival[]

The Residents made an appearance at the 20th annual festival in October 1997, celebrating their 25th Anniversary. The "Kill-A-Commie" clip (from the Bad Day On The Midway video game) was screened, followed by the laserdisc retrospective Twenty Twisted Questions.
Following the screening, The Residents were given a birthday cake by festival staff, and the presentation concluded with a video clip known as "Happy Birthday, Mr. Resident" (edited from the famous footage of actress Marilyn Monroe serenading then-President John F. Kennedy in 1962), which has never been seen elsewhere.
2022 festival[]
In October 2022, The Residents screened their feature film Triple Trouble at the festival, and previewed their upcoming 50th Anniversary tour Faceless Forever with a special one-off performance at Sweetwater Music Hall.
