O for Obscurity, Or, The Story of N is a biographical book by British writer Andrew Hook, based on coded journals written by Bavarian avant-garde music composer The Mysterious N. Senada (1907 - 1993).

It was published by the Eyeball Museum on September 19th 2020, alongside a limited edition green vinyl reissue of The Residents' 1997 interpretation of Senada's composition Pollex Christi on Psychofon Records.

History[]

O for Obscurity, Or, The Story of N first came about when British writer Andrew Hook was researching files from the defunct television program The South Bank Show in London, where, among files for an episode they produced on The Residents, he discovered a piece of paper with some seemingly random numbers written on them, some of which were circled. The piece of paper was signed "N. Senada".

A few years later, Hook devised a method of decoding the numbers and realized it was a page from a diary written by Senada. Hook sent the page to The Cryptic Corporation but heard nothing back at the time.

The Cryptic Corporation later discovered a box containing a diary written by Senada in their archives, in the process of preparing The Residents' pREServed series of reissues. Homer Flynn recalled the decoded page sent years earlier by Hook, and sent the diary to him to decode.
