Freispiel (Originally titled Ravvivando Remixes) is a remix album by experimental krautrock group Faust. It is based enitlrely on their 1999 album 'Ravvivando'. The Residents are featured on this album, and contribute to the track 'T-Électronique'
Background[]
Faust was formed by Werner Diermaier, Hans Joachim Irmler, Arnulf Meifert, Jean-Hervé Péron, Rudolf Sosna and Gunter Wüsthoff around the same time that Residents Uninc was founded in late 1971, although in Faust began in Wümme, Germany, and Residents in California, USA. Whilst Residents Uninc's initial attempts to impress record labels had all failed, Faust were almost instantly signed to Polydor Records not even a year following their formation.
Faust's self titled debut LP was released in October of 1971 and sold poorly, despite heavy critical acclaim. Their second LP, titled 'So Far', was more successful internationally, and may have caught the attention of Residents Uninc. Their third LP, released in July of 1973 (After the formation of The Residents), was very successful when released in the U.K; thanks to it's heavy marketing campaign from Virgin Records as well as experimentally low price. The band's fifth LP was rejected by Virgin Records in 1975, and the group disbanded.
Shortly after this, close friend of The Residents Chris Cutler, (who was working on Eskimo at the time) began to re-issue Faust's original material through his record label Reccomended Records.
Throughout the 1980s and early 90s, the group worked together sporadically, but officially reunited with the release of the 1994 album 'Rien'. Their eighth album, 'Ravvivando', was released in early 1999, and featured two founding members of Faust, Werner "Zappi" Diermaier and Hans Joachim Irmler. The album was well received, and in 2001, a guest start heavy remix of the album was created, featuring The Residents reworking the original album's final track 'T-Électronique'.
Release[]
Promotional copies of the album were released in late 2001 by Faust's Klangbad label under the title 'Ravvivando Remixes', and was officially released in 2002, with the title 'Freispiel.' An abridged LP version of the album, which excludes The Residents' contribution, was released concurrently.
