Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9th 1913 – April 22nd 1994) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 37th President of the United States between 1969 and 1974. A member of the Republican Party, Nixon also served as a representative and senator from California, and as the 36th vice president from 1953 to 1961.

Nixon was elected as a member of the US Senate in 1950 and served as Vice President for eight years between 1951 - 1961. He ran for US President in 1960 and was finally elected in 1968. His five years in the White House saw the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, détente with the Soviet Union and China, the first manned moon landings, and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency.

On August 9, 1974, Nixon's second term ended early when, facing almost certain impeachment and removal from office, he became the first American president to resign from office following the Watergate scandal. Afterwards, he was issued a pardon by his successor, Gerald Ford.

In 20 years of retirement, Nixon wrote his memoirs and nine other books and undertook many foreign trips, rehabilitating his image into that of an elder statesman and leading expert on foreign affairs. He suffered a debilitating stroke on April 18, 1994, and died four days later at age 81.

Nixon was a figure of popular parody during his time in office, including among the members of The Residents. The group's first noted parody of Nixon was featuring him (in a collage with Mr. Peanut) on the back cover art of their 1971 demo tape The W***** B*** Album.

In December 1972, The Residents, inaugurating their new record label Ralph Records, are known to have sent Nixon a copy of their debut double 7" EP Santa Dog, which was returned to the group unopened, stamped "refused". Their song "Saint Nix" was composed and recorded shortly after Nixon's resignation in August 1974, with vocals being completed in early 1983.[1]

Most recently, Nixon appeared in the group's work as the narrator of the animated video "Nixon Sings The Blues", released on YouTube in 2017 and featured as part of The Residents' live tour In Between Dreams, which premiered in the same year.
