"Safety Is A Cootie Wootie" is a three part suite recorded by The Residents in 1983. Part of the suite was released the following year on the Japanese release Tra Special Comics (accompanied by a short comic based on the track); and then as the B-side to "This Is A Man's Man's Man's World".
The suite was first issued in its complete form as part of the 1989 CD reissue of The Big Bubble and later on the 1998 CD Residue Deux.
History[]
The track was recorded in 1983, around the time of the recording sessions for the unfinished album Man. In February 1984, parts two and three of the suite ("Toddler Lullaby" and "Safety Is A Cootie Wootie") appeared on the Japanese release Tra Special Comics. The compilation featured a comic book which included a short, abstract comic based on the song, with art credited to "Jocko Levant Brainiac 5" (Gary Panter).
In April, the same edit was released as the B-side to their single "This Is A Man's Man's Man's World" (also known as The White Single); except on European pressings, where it was replaced by "I'll Go Crazy".
The full suite was first released on the 1989 CD reissue of The Big Bubble; this version features the 4 minute "Prelude For A Toddler" excluded from the earlier releases. This version was later featured on Residue Deux (the expanded CD reissue of the Residue of The Residents outtakes compilation) in 1998.
"Prelude For A Toddler" was featured separately on the limited edition instrumental compilation Best Left Unspoken... Volume Two in 2007. The third part of the suite was separately included on the Petting Zoo compilation in 2002, and later on the retrospective box set 80 Aching Orphans in 2017.
Comic[]
For the comic book included with Tra Special Comics in 1984, The Residents also supplied an eight-page comic based on "Safety Is A Cootie Wootie", with abstract illustrations credited to "Jocko Levant Brainiac 5".
Unlike the rest of the collaborators, The Residents do not give any details about their career nor any photos in the attached bio; only the message "Residents?". To date, the comic has not been reprinted.
