Six More Miles (To the Graveyard) is a song written by Hank Williams for MGM Records. It appeared as the B-side to "I Saw the Light" in 1948. The Residents have covered it multiple times.
Background[]
Six More Miles was released by Hank Williams in 1948 as the B-Side to 'I Saw the Light'. The single was not a success upon release. The Residents were toddlers when the song was released, but likely heard it much later, when they grew to appreciate Williams more.
The Residents first recorded their version as part of the Hank Williams side to their 1986 album 'Stars & Hank Forever' The first re-recording and live performance came only a year later, for The Snakey Wake Snakefinger memorial project. The '87 features a much longer intro featuring train sound effects, a staple of later reworkings.
The song was revived in 2010 for the Talking Light project, it was chosen for its association with death, as Talking Light was based on death and ghosts. The Talking Light arrangement would draw the song out much longer than it's original 4 minutes, featuring a long train-track intro, as well as longer instrumental spaces between verses. This version would be recorded for the album Lonely Teenager. A version closer to The Residents '86 arrangement would be performed at the Moravian Meeting show in 2010.
Most recently the song was performed as the encore to the In Between Dreams tour from 2017 to 2019. Following the death of Hardy Fox in 2018, the song took a sadder meaning.
Lyrics[]
Stars & Hank, and Moravian Meeting Versions.
Oh the rain is slowly falling And my heart is so sore Six More Miles, to leave my darling Never on this earth, to me no more.
Six More Miles, To The Graveyard Six More Miles, Long and Sad Six More Miles, I'll leave my darling Leave the best friend, I ever had
Oh I hear, the train-a-coming Bringing my darling back home Six More Miles, To The Graveyard And I'll be left, here all alone.
Six More Miles, To The Graveyard Six More Miles, Long and Sad Six More Miles, Leave My Darling Leave the best friend, I ever had. Leave the best friend, I ever had.
