"Smelly Tongues" is a song by The Residents, first released on their debut album Meet The Residents, released on Ralph Records on April 1st 1974.
Part of a continuous medley of songs on side A of the album, it features vocals by the group's friend Barry "Wool" Eiland. It was excerpted on the promotional Meet The Residents Sampler flexidisc prior to the release of the album.
One of The Residents' signature songs, a cover version was the B-side to their collaborator Snakefinger's debut solo single "The Spot" in 1978, and it has featured in many of their live shows, including The 13th Anniversary Show, the Fillmore '98 residency, and Talking Light.
History[]
"Smelly Tongues" was composed and recorded in 1973 by The Residents, during the "Tuesday" improvisation sessions which became the group's debut album Meet The Residents, released on April Fool's Day on their label Ralph Records the following year. The song likely has origins in a piece titled "Overday", recorded earlier in the sessions.
The song's lyrics directly refer to four of the five human senses; the fifth sense, hearing, is implied by listening to the song. An early version of "Smelly Tongues" recorded during the Tuesday sessions and released much later on the pREServed CD edition of Meet The Residents in 2018 included a short, improvised introduction and vocals by Hardy Fox.
The version included on the album features vocals by Barry "Wool" Eiland, a high school friend of some members of The Residents, and brother of Palmer Eiland, then starring as tag-team wrestler Arf Berry in the group's ultimately abandoned feature film Vileness Fats.
The song would inspire an unofficial fan club of the same name led by noted collector Ima Buddy, which was active between 1998 and 2005.
Later versions[]
"Smelly Tongues" was re-recorded in May 1978 by Snakefinger, as the B-side to his debut solo single, "The Spot" (with both selections being produced by The Residents).
From 1985 to 1987, The Residents and Snakefinger performed the song live as part of the 13th Anniversary Show. The song was next performed in 1998 at the group's residency at the Fillmore in October 1998, as a special encore in a medley with the Commercial Album songs "Moisture" and "Picnic Boy".
The song wouldn't be performed again until 2010, when it was introduced as the opening number during shows on the second leg of the Talking Light tour. The Talking Light arrangement expands upon the original, being twice the length and introducing a harmonica solo. Later that year, Residents singer Randy Rose performed a more faithful arrangement of the song live, as part of his one-off performance with Už Jsme Doma in the Czech Republic.
As part of the abandoned 40th Anniversary re-recording of Meet The Residents, Residents composer and keyboardist Charles Bobuck recorded an updated demo version, faithful to the original but with different instrumentation.
Three fan covers of "Smelly Tongues" were included in the I Am A Resident! collaborative cover album in 2018; versions by The Zverstwo, Tom-Erik Løe and Emerald Suspension were included in the album proper, the Emerald Suspension version was included on the vinyl edition of the album, and the Zverstwo and Løe renditions were included as stand-alone tracks on the bonus disc of the CD version of the album.
It was later played during the Faceless Forever Tour, as the first part of a suite, in which the song flowed directly into Moisture, and then Constantinople.
