Summer Tunes (also referred to as the Summer Beach Party[1]) is a title informally ascribed to a series of free MP3 releases by The Residents and Snakefinger (with The Vestal Virgins), which were uploaded to The Residents' official blog between June 13th and 29th 2008.[2][3]

The tracks include selected instrumentals, remixes, album tracks and other assorted rarities. It has since occasionally been mistaken by fans for an official compilation album since its unofficial 2017 upload to YouTube; otherwise, it has not been reissued or made available since the tracks were removed from the blog at the end of June 2008.

History[]

The MP3s in the collection were selected by The Residents and The Cryptic Corporation so that fans could have "groove-like SUMMER tunes for your ipod when you are at the pool or hanging around the soda shop".[2] They were uploaded to the group's official blog by its administrator Big Brother between June 13th and 29th 2008.[2][3]

The tracks are largely demos, remixes and instrumental versions of songs by The Residents and their late friend and collaborator Snakefinger (including some tracks with his backing band The Vestal Virgins). Assorted album tracks are also included, as well as "Marching to the Beach", an outtake said to originate from the Part Three of The Mole Trilogy sessions which was later reissued on Mole Suite in 2011 and Mole Box in 2019. The music featured on the 2008 tour-only release Dogtag (Bunny Intermission) has also been noted as being "closely related" to the Summer Tunes tracks.[1]

The collection had mostly been removed from the group's website by the end of the month. It has not been reissued since; however, it was uploaded to YouTube on March 5th 2017 by fan MrWzzW, under the title Summer Tunes. As the group's blog was long defunct by this point and the video's accompanying description was ambiguous (stating only that the collection was released in 2008), the upload has caused some confusion among fans who could not locate the release in the group's official discography or on their Discogs page.
