Notes From Ralph[]
"It just so happens, though, that The Residents did record "Flying", a Beatles tune from the Magical Mystery Tour album. You may be more interested to know, however, that The Beatles recorded a Residents song on the flip side of this very same record. It was [difficult getting The Beatles in the studio again], in fact, The Beatles don’t even know they were there."
- Jay Clem, The Residents Radio Special, 1977
"A limited edition of 500 numbered 45 rpm singles with hand printed 3 color covers. 'A' side is actually a composition made up of portions of songs recorded by The Beatles which were treated and edited by The Residents. Flying is a Beatles composition performed by The Residents."
- The Official W.E.I.R.D. Book of The Residents, 1979
"The Residents designed this single to be a tribute to The Beatles, but also to satirize Beatles music as a whole. It encouraged two humorous rumors which became widely publicized about The Residents at that time -- first, that The Residents vehemently opposed everything that The Beatles represented; and secondly, that The Residents were, in fact, the actual Beatles. Confidential sources have since revealed that neither of these rumors are true. The A-side of this fold-out single features a composition made up of portions of numerous Beatles songs (and one segment from a fan club album), which were edited and processed by The Residents. The B-side features a cut from The Beatles' MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR album, Flying, as performed by The Residents. THE BEATLES PLAY THE RESIDENTS was a limited edition of 500 numbered copies, with hand-screened, 3 color jackets . Registration cards were also provided with this single, as with APHIDS IN THE HALL and the original release of SATISFACTION. These small index cards were to be completed and mailed back to the Cryptic Corporation, so that the purchaser could be kept informed of the current market value of his records. Unfortunately, this service was never provided, as it soon grew to be overly time-consuming."
- The Cryptic Guide to The Residents, 1986
"We released it in 1977 as a 45rpm single having The Beatles perform on one side and The Residents on the other. Hand screened cover, Pore Know Graphics, limited edition of 500 copies. Very cool."
- Charles Bobuck, THIS is for Readers, 2016
"This is the common title of a single which has two tracks: Beyond the Valley of a Day in the Life and Flying. The first track - aka "The Beatles Play The Residents" - is a tape collage of excerpts from songs by The Beatles.
The track ends with Paul McCartney repeating the phrase "please, everybody, if we haven't done what we could have done, we tried" over and over. This is an excerpt from the third fan club Christmas record the Beatles released.
The flip side of the single, "The Residents Play The Beatles", is a cover of Flying, which was chosen for the treatment because it was the only song the band could find which credits all four Beatles as composers.
500 copies of the single were printed with hand screened three-color jackets.

"Meet The Residents, of course, is a Beatles crossover, so... you know, it always goes for high money because Beatles collectors want that, and you know, the 7" inch... that they did, The Beatles Play The Residents and The Residents Play The Beatles, so... they're always the two sort of high-end things as far as their collectibles go."
