Notes From Ralph[]

"A promotional radio special of music & dialogue, scripted and acted out by members of The Cryptic Corp with impromptu background music by The Residents. Copies of this program were sent out to co-operating radio stations on tape in either reel, cartridge or cassette format in an effort to increase radio play. Not released to the general public. No accompanying artwork."

- "The W.E.I.R.D. Complete Discography & Recording History", 1979

"THE RESIDENTS RADIO SPECIAL is a 1-hour promotional show which was originally sent out only to radio stations, in order to increase public interest in The Residents, and thus obtain more airplay for the group. The tape features interview segments with Jay Clem, a former Cryptic Corporation executive, and covers the Residents' career up until 1977, emphasizing their more obscure musical material. Impromptu background music is performed by The Residents during the 10 minutes of dialogue scattered throughout the program.

This special features quite a number of rarities: both sides of THE BEATLES PLAY THE RESIDENTS single; both sides of SATISFACTION (which had not yet been re-released); Whoopy Snorp (from BLORP ESETTE); a medley of songs from the original SANTA DOG EP; 3 of the 4 songs from BABYFINGERS; and even two songs from the unreleased BABY SEX album.

Initially, 300 copies of THE RESIDENTS RADIO SPECIAL were sent out to radio stations; no artwork was included with the tapes, only printed sheets which listed the song titles and dialogue segments.

In 1983, due to renewed public interest, Ralph Records began to sell copies of the program to the general public. The first printing (about 100 copies) was of the same form as the original -- no labels or artwork, but with accompanying title sheets. The second printing (700-800 copies) listed the tape contents on a small white card which was enclosed in the cassette box. The final edition (1000 copies) has a blue listing card, but is otherwise identical to the previous edition."

- The Cryptic Guide to The Residents, 1986

"Originally released to a limited number of radio stations in 1977,(and then later to fans as a limited cassette) this is an interview of ex-Ralph Records employee, Jay Clem, conducted by Sid Powell (of Houston's RAO Studios), which includes music excerpts and funny stories. Actually, the only original that could be found was an old cassette from the Cryptic vault, so it was mastered from that, but retains some old cassette "wobble" here and there. It contributes to the vintage feeling of the recording (just like that scratchy remastered Charley Patton stuff we like so well), but after the interview, the "remastered" versions of all of the musical excerpts are presented in their entirety, so you get an overall run time of 74 minutes! Packaged in a nice digipak, stored in an original bag from RAO Studios, this is a fine start to their 30th year. Track list: Radio Special parts 1-4, Music from Special: Monstrous Intro, Death in Barstow, Beyond the Valley of a Day in the Life, Flying, King Kong, Whoopy Snorp, Melon Collie Lassie, Kamikazi Lady - all hand numbered to #1003."
