The Eyes Scream is a short documentary on The Residents directed by John Sanborn and hosted by Penn & Teller.

Background[]

Sometime in mid 1990, The Residents realized that even though they were approaching nearly 20 years of public activity, no one had even bothered to film a documentary about them yet. Deciding that this was simply unacceptable, the artists began to compile their favorite clips, and commissioned director John Sanborn to create a cohesive short documentary surrounding them. Penn & Teller, who had worked with The Residents on the 13th Anniversary and Mole Show, were cast as the hosts of the documentary. Production concluded by May 7th 1990.[1] For many of the clips featured, this was their first home video release, such as Don't Be Cruel, and some of the live clips.

The short film was released on VHS by Torso Kino in the US and Holland, and by Palace Video in the UK, around November 15th, 1991.[2]

Synopsis[]

The documentary is less of narrative telling of The Residents' history, and more of a showcase of the group's video clips, spanning from their Vileness Fats film project in 1972 to their Cube-E project in 1990, with wraparound segments from Penn & Teller, as well as interviews with The Cryptic Corporation.
