On March 30th 2017, The Residents performed their newly released concept album The Ghost of Hope live at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, California, as part of the venue's adults-only "After Dark" program, occurring on Thursday nights from 6pm to 10pm.[1] This performance followed three performances of their live show In Between Dreams in Tokyo earlier in the month.
The sold-out Ghost of Hope performance was a unique one-off show, which had been promoted as a "listening party" for the album with only minimal participation from the group.[2] For this show, the album was stripped down to only "minimal backing tracks", with the group performing the remainder of the arrangements as a live ensemble, similar to their Icky Flix Live show from 2001.[3] The show was preceded by the screening of a short introductory video, and the John Sanborn music video for "Rushing Like a Banshee".
The day after the show, a video of the full performance was released on YouTube by the venue.[3] The Residents were apparently considering "developing more stuff" based on The Ghost of Hope following the conclusion of the In Between Dreams tour, including a fully produced stage show, however these plans have not come to fruition as of 2025.[4]
