The King & Eye: RMX is a remix album by The Residents, re-considering the material recorded for their 1989 King & Eye album, updating it for a modern audience.

Liner Notes[]

"On January 8th, 1935, Gladys and Vernon Presley produced identical twin boys, Jesse Garon, and Elvis Aron. Meanwhile, Tom "The Colonel" Parker had a circus act featuring a pony and a monkey. Jesse Garon died at birth. The Colonel told Elvis Aron that he would make him a King. Elvis became a King, but that didn't help him get his name spelled correctly on his tombstone. "The King" earned over 140 Gold Records, among them are the following songs:..."

Background[]

Elvis[]

Elvis Presley entered the big-time music industry at 19 when he appeared on the local radio program Louisiana Hayride. The future Residents were children. Throughout their teen years and into their twenties, Elvis remained a fixture of Pop Culture, but by the time The Residents had formed, he was struggling to attract mainstream attention and was soon to die.

The Baby King[]

By 1989, The Residents were fully formed and established as a group known for their elaborate visuals and stage presence. They decided to create a show retelling the history of American music, starting with Cowboy Poetry and leading up to the tragedy of Elvis. The Elvis portion of the show proved popular with early audiences, and the group decided to adapt that segment as their next album, The King & Eye.

Production[]

While The Residents were proud of the work they'd done for The King & Eye upon its release, it became apparent that something needed to be changed. Over a decade later, they hired German Producer Paralyzer to reconsider the material the same way they had done to Elvis's originals. The King & Eye was the second part of their RMX trilogy, the first installment of which (WB:RMX) was being crafted concurrently.

Release[]

The project was announced in May 2002, with a release date set for Autumn of that year. Cryptic announced that the album would be remixed by a German group and not The Residents.[1] The album was eventually released two years later, in March of 2004. It features four songs not found on the original album, 'Jailhouse Rock,' 'Surrender', 'Don't,' & 'Can't Help Falling In Love.' 'Don't' & ''Surrender' are remixs of tracks from the Don't Be Cruel EP. The other two are based on previously unheard recordings.

Reception []

AllMusic poorly received the album, saying it lacked the menace of the original and critiqued the pedestrian mixes of Paralyser. Exclaim! on the other hand, praised the album but noted how it would probably be unappealing to long-time Residents fans.
