The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The first stable line-up consisted of band leader Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica, keyboards), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar, vocals), Bill Wyman (bass), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ian Stewart (piano). Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued to work with the band as a contracted musician.

The band's primary songwriters, Jagger and Richards, assumed leadership after Andrew Loog Oldham became the group's manager. The Stones have not had an official keyboardist since 1963, but have employed several musicians in that role, including Jack Nitzsche (1965–1971) and Nicky Hopkins (1967–1982).

Their commercial success and influence in popular culture has led The Residents to cover them several times, most notably on their 1976 single "Satisfaction".

Influence on The Residents[]

"Satisfaction" was first covered by The Pre-Residents on their unreleased demo tapes The Ballad of Stuffed Trigger and Rusty Coathangers for the Doctor in 1970.

The finale of The Residents' third album The Third Reich 'n Roll, recorded in 1975, interpolates "Sympathy for the Devil" with "Hey Jude" by The Beatles.

The following year The Residents recorded another cover of "Satisfaction" with guitarist Snakefinger, and later performed this arrangement live at their appearance at Rather Ripped Records' fifth anniversary party. The Residents are known to have (uncharacteristically) recorded a large number of different arrangements of the song while recording the single.

The Residents recorded a drastically different arrangement of "Satisfaction" in 1982, during studio rehearsals for the abandoned 10th Anniversary tour. They would go on to include the song as the penultimate song in the set list of their debut tour The Mole Show from 1982 to 1983.

The next mention of The Rolling Stones is in the liner notes of the 1992 album Our Finest Flowers, which note that the Stones and The Grateful Dead were the only long-lasting comparable acts to The Residents, while also noting the deaths of Brian Jones and Ian Stewart.

For their Adobe Disfigured Night performance at the San Jose Tech Museum in 1997, The Residents performed a cover version of "Paint It Black".

They would revisit "Paint It Black" in 2010 for their one-off live show So Long Sam. The Residents' singer Randy Rose performed the song in 2011 and 2012 as part of his one-man version of the show, Sam's Enchanted Evening.
