"The Shoe Salesman" is a song by The Residents & Renaldo & The Loaf. It was recorded entirely in 1983 in the overdub sessions for Title In Limbo.

Background[]

The track was recorded by The Residents & Brian Poole at Groove Street Studios in October 1983. Dave Janssen, who had co-written the song with the Poole & The Residents, could not attend the recording sessions in the US, so recorded tape loops in his home studio to be used.

The track was released November 15th 1983 on the album 'Title In Limbo'

For The Residents' 20th Anniversary album 'Our Finest Flowers', The Residents re-recorded the track as 'I'm Dreaming of a White Sailor', using instrumental elements from their 1980 song 'My Second Wife'.

The song was revisited again for both the Demons Dance Alone Tour as well as the Golden Goat DVD. The song was played all throughout the tour and can be viewed in the "Demons Dance Alone" DVD as well as the "Demonic! The Residents Live In Oslo!" DVD. The songs lyrics were featured on a easter egg in the previously mentioned Golden Goat DVD.

In 2017 Klanggalerie finally released the long awaited 4 daze tape. On this tape is 45 minutes of demos that would become "title in limbo". Some fans speculate because none of the demos contain any motifs from "The Shoes Salesman" that the song was recorded completely from scratch in 1983.

Lyrics[]

Sometimes I feel her feet
When I am fast asleep
I know that I am dreaming
But the touch is soft and sweet

I know that I am dreaming

I went to see my mother
She told me of a lover
She had a long long time ago
She'll never have another

He put her on his bed
And looked at her instead
Of making love
He laughed a lot
And this is what he said
Truth comes out of fiction
Love comes our of friction
Purity is interesting
But so is superstition

And so I go to work
I'm just a short shoe clerk
And open up the store and say
Hello, my name is Bert

While I look at feet
My thoughts are bitter-sweet
I sure did love her black high heels
They were so indiscreet.

But I am not bitter
Nor am I out to get her
I care so very much for her
I just want her shoes to fit her [1]
