The Sleepwalker is an outtake from The Residents' 2002 album 'Demons Dance Alone', it first appeared on the Demons Dance Alone Box Set on the second disc.

Background

The song was written and recorded during the sessions for their 2002 album 'Demons Dance Alone.' It features lead vocals from Molly Harvey & The Singing Resident. The lyrics depict a woman going to find her lover, who is lying on the ground, singing in his sleep. The woman understands that the man is hiding himself from the world through sleep. Similar to the then unreleased song 'Howard'

The song was remixed for inclusion on the 2004 album '12 Days of Brumalia', this version removes most of the lyrics, except for the main chorus, and is re-titled 'Day 11' or 'Pieta's Piper'

The song was then performed live for the first time in 2010, for the Talking Light tour. The song remained in the setlist until 2011.

Shortly after its inclusion in the Talking Light tour, a new studio version was recorded, now featuring Randy Rose on vocals.

An instrumental demo version recorded around 2010 appeared on the album 'Chuck's Ghost Music' this version was used as the instrumental for the studio version found on the 'Randy's Ghost Stories' DVD, featuring Adan Faudoa on vocals.

Lyrics

When I went to see my baby
He was in a night gown
When I went to see my baby
he was on the ground
There was nothing in his eyes
As I sat beside him
There was nothing in his eyes
Nothing that could hide him
He was singing in his sleep
And he was singing sadly
He was singing in his sleep
And he was looking at me
There was something in his voice
Something I was sensing
There was something in his voice
Something I was missing
May-be I should go to sleep...
May-be I should go to sleep...
May-be I should go to sleep...
May-be I should go to sleep...
Pity Opened up my heart
And Pity recognised him
Pity opened up my heart
And nothing could disguise Him
He had sealed himself inside
A body he could sleep in
He had sealed himself inside
And nobody could see him.
May-be I should go to sleep...
I'm a lonely little lamb
Looking for a hunk of ham
I'm a lonely little lamb
Looking for a hunk of ham
I'm a lonely little lamb
Looking for a home,
home, home, home, home, home.
