The Window of Never is an enigmatic chasm in the sky outside the fictional village of Vileness Flats, which was to be the setting of the unfilmed climactic sequence of The Residents' abandoned feature film Vileness Fats, shot by the group from 1972 to 1976.

Located directly atop a volcano, the Window of Never set appears to have never been constructed by the group, and the concluding sequence remained uncompleted at the time of the project's abandonment in 1976.

In Vileness Fats[]

The Window of Never is a mysterious window in the sky, which is situated directly above a volcano on the outskirts of Vileness Flats. Its existence is foreshadowed throughout Vileness Fats; both the film's hero Saint Steve and his alter-ego, the film's antagonist Lonesome Jack, openly worry that they are fated to die by falling into the volcano beneath the Window.

Near the end of the film, both Steve and Lonesome Jack run to the volcano, both intending to throw themselves into it. As the Window gazes over the proceedings with "seeming indifference", Steve is saved at the last minute by the intervention of his Mother, who arrives at the Window of Never with the villagers of Vileness Flats.

History[]

Though some film footage exists of the march of Steve's Mother with the villagers of Vileness Flats, the Window of Never sequence was never filmed by The Residents, and the set is not known to have been constructed at any point during production of Vileness Fats. As the scene was not filmed, and the film's dialogue was often written only weeks or days prior to filming, the sequence may not have even been scripted in detail.

To date, no design elements of the Window of Never as originally conceived by the group have been released to the public. However in November 2020 Homer Flynn, who portrayed The Cape Dancer/Death in the film and acts as the spokesperson for The Residents, posted a photo to Instagram captioned "The Window of Never",[1] suggesting a possible resemblance to the Window of Never as it was intended to appear in the film.
