"Theme For An American TV Show" is a short instrumental composition by The Residents, composed around 1980 as the theme music for an unspecified American weekly comedy TV program. It was their first known attempt to compose soundtrack music for a project which had not been conceived by the group themselves.
The piece was rejected by the producers of the show, who felt that it was simply too strange, and it ultimately went unused until its debut release by the British cassette magazine Touch on their compilation Ritual: Magnetic North in 1985.[1]
It was performed by the group on their 13th Anniversary Show tour between 1985 and 1987, and has since featured (often uncredited) on a number of releases stemming from that tour. It was also re-released as a bonus track on the ESD CD reissue of Commercial Album in 1988.
