"It's a Man's Man's Man's World" is a song written by James Brown and Betty Jean Newsome. Brown recorded it on February 16, 1966, in a New York City studio and released it as a single later that year; its title a word play on the 1963 comedy film, 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.' It reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Residents released their cover of It's a Man's Man's Man's World in 1984, and have reworked it a number of times, releasing sixteen total alternative recordings of the song.
History[]
When It's a Man's Man's Man's World was released by James Brown in 1966, Brown was already a hugely popular star, and the young Residents were already fans by that point, and had seen Brown in concert the year prior. The song was a big hit for Brown, and was later, in 1974, covered by Renée Geyer.
The Residents' first take on the song was recorded and released in 1984. They have since recorded many alternate versions.
