Triple Trouble - The Original Soundtrack Recording[1] (alternatively Triple Trouble: The Original Soundtrack Album) is a soundtrack album by The Residents, featuring seven "collaged suites" containing extended musical cues, dialogue, and some "familiar themes" from the group's 2022 feature film of the same name.
The album was released through Cherry Red Records and MVD Audio on November 18th 2022, with three vinyl variants (including a picture disc and a "die-hard" art object edition) distributed by Psychofon Records.[2][1][3]
History[]
On November 16th 2016, The Residents published a YouTube video announcing that they would be making a film titled Double Trouble, set in the universe of their "Randy, Chuck and Bob" project, while also acting as a spiritual sequel to their unfinished feature film Vileness Fats. Production eventually slowed, leading The Residents to rewrite the script, at which point it become an entirely new film, now titled Triple Trouble.
Homer Flynn confirmed the release of a soundtrack album in December 2020, at that time with the working title Endless Illusions. Flynn also noted that ideas developed by The Residents while recording the Triple Trouble soundtrack had "opened up a door for what they might want to do with the next album."[4]
The soundtrack (later simply titled Triple Trouble) was "in the can" as of May 2022, with graphics finalized in February.[1] It was initially planned for release in June,[1] but was ultimately delayed to follow the film's premiere at the Chicago Underground Film Festival in September.
Writing[]
For Triple Trouble, The Residents worked with Eric Drew Feldman, who has been working closely with the group since August 2015. The album prominently features lines of dialogue from the film, sometimes in alternative versions.
The soundtrack features several samples of earlier works by The Residents, the most apparent being "Fire Fall" from Wormwood, and "The Importance of Evergreen", "Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats?" and "Willie's Last Word" from the soundtrack to the 1984 video Whatever Happened To Vileness Fats?.
"Killing Time" appears to resemble "Train Vs. Elephant" from the 2017 album The Ghost of Hope; the title may also be a reference to the posthumously released Hardy Fox album of the same name.
Release[]
Following the film's premiere, the CD edition of the Triple Trouble soundtrack was announced for release and made available for pre-order on September 9th 2022 through Cherry Red Records and MVD Audio.[2][1][3]
Later in the month Psychofon Records announced three vinyl variants, a standard black vinyl edition and two special limited editions: a picture disc featuring a zoetrope image of an eyeball-masked Resident (who dances when the vinyl spins) limited to 250 copies, and a "die hard art object" edition, consisting of a white-streaked transparent vinyl LP, screwed to a foam block and housed in a large tin "film canister" with handmade spray paint artwork by Psychofon's art department;[5] limited to only 100 copies.
Pre-sale for the vinyl editions opened on October 1st.[6] A sampler track comprised of elements of a number of musical cues from the soundtrack and a Randy Rose monologue from the film, titled "Trouble Comin' Every Day", was uploaded to YouTube on November 16th 2022, two days prior to the album's release.
